Terceira Cattle Dog

Terceira Cattle Dog (Barbado da Terceira) was recognized by Portugues Kennel club (CPC) 2004. Unfortunately this lovely cattle/guard dog hasn´t been introduced yet for FCI.
Barbado is middle sized dog. Males 52-58 cm and females 48-54 cm.
Coat is long and wavy with undercoat. Texture has to be strong, but
not rough. Working dogs are normally sheared once a year. Acceptable
colours are black, gray, "wolf gray", yellow and fawn. Can have
white patches in the hands and/or feet, pectoral, throat, neck
(forming a collar), chest, belly and tip of tail.
Most of the dogs are croped and docked.
Barbados origin is from Azores islands, Terceira island.
The “Barbado” probably evolved from dogs used in gathering wild
cattle brought by the settlers since the 15th century. It should be
kept in mind that over the next centuries many people travelling
with their dogs through the islands will have decisively influenced
the present Barbado.
The "official" breeding started in the 70´s. In the early 90´s there
was 80 dogs which conformed to the standard.
The 1st special show was 15th of January 2005 in Terceira island.
The first Barbados ware presented on the mainland in Fundão 22nd of
October 2005.
The first Portugues champions titles, were given to Adágio and
Duquesa-B . In 2008 Duquesa-B was placed 3rd in the portugues
breeds.
